Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest has come to the difficult decision to cancel the 2017 Tour de Hans Event.

Attention Riders:

Since the beginning, original Oktoberfest celebrations included sporting events, and Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest has worked hard over the years to carry on that tradition.  Cyclists from all over Southern Ontario have made the trip to Kitchener-Waterloo to ride in a truly unique event that mixed traditional Oktoberfest celebrations with a passion for cycling. Our Festival and our volunteers have worked very hard over the past several years to make the Tour de Hans a top tier event.

You may have seen in the news recently how it has become increasingly difficult to secure cycling routes because of public outcry, political pressure and the cost of securing permits. Running an event such as the Tour de Hans requires a large overhead, and with ridership steadily declining over the past 4 years, Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest has come to the difficult decision to cancel the 2017 Tour de Hans Event. This is not a permanent “cancellation“, it’s more like we are placing the event on the shelf for now with the hope of being able to revisit the Tour de Hans at a later date.

We are obviously very disappointed with this outcome, but we had to make a decision based on what’s best for Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest. We want to thank the riders who have supported us and we also want to thank the volunteers whose enthusiasm and dedication to this event was unparalleled. As well, a special thank you to the local businesses that believed in this event, and backed it with sponsorship dollars.

If you have any questions about this decision, please contact Jay Nijhuis at jayn@oktoberfest.ca and he will get in touch with you as quickly as possible.

Thanks so much and we hope to see you again soon
